Boardies Day

On Thursday, 7th March we helped raise money for the Surf Life Saving Club to buy new equipment. We sold red and yellow cupcakes and painted red and yellow zinc cream on students faces. We sold a lot of cup cakes! We had a lot of help!

Each class made a lifesaver and we displayed these around the school – we thought they looked great! We will also display these down at Horseshoe Bay over the long weekend so our community can see them as well and understand what a great contribution our lifesavers make!

A local lifesaver Marty Smee, from the Port Elliot Surf Lifesaving Club talked to our class and the upper primary classes about how he became a lifesaver and how he is involved in the club. He also talked to us about how we can become nippers and what fun it is!
So how much did we raise?

I took a photo of all the money we raised after I stacked it all up. Can you work out from the photo below how much money we raised? See if you can work it out on a piece of paper and bring your sheet to school next Tuesday. I have given you some clues below;

5c coins are in stacks of $1.00

10c coins are in stacks of $1.00

20c coins are in stacks of $2.00

50c coins are in stacks of $5.00

$1 coins are in stacks of $10.00

$2 coins are in stacks of $ 10.00

all notes are as seen

don’t forget to count the loose change in $1 coins!

What a great day it was and a fantastic effort by the students and the parents, who helped make cakes, donated cakes and/or sold cakes on the day – a very big thank you !

How much money did we make?

Thanks to everyone that accepted the challenge and tried to work out just how much money we made at our arcade. The total amount was a staggering $298.10!!!!

But to be fair to those that did try to work out the amount in the photo below, the total was $272.70!!

We made a bit more on the following Monday and one of our students kindly donated his pocket money to go towards the total profit that we made.

Thank you so much for everyone that helped us to reach our goal of buying a class ipad. With the money that we raised and the money from our class budget, I am happy to say that we have ordered our new ipad and are eagerly waiting for it to arrive.

We will be looking at what apps to put on our new ipad and if you have any suggestions of any apps that you think would be of educational value, could you please let us know?

Thank you!!!

Our Arcade was a success!

Our Arcade games were a huge success and children from right across the school enjoyed playing with them last week. We received lots of positive comments and a lot of teachers were amazed at how good they were and that they all worked! I was so proud of the children in our class. They have worked tirelessly on this project and gained lots of skills as they designed, organised, measured, counted, problem solved, communicated with each other, wrote rules, counted money, exchanged money, showed resilience and persistence and so much more.

Students also learnt about marketing skills; one of the highlights of the day was when one of my students came up to me and said he had dropped the price of his arcade. When I asked him why he said he had to because no one was playing his arcade as it was too expensive. He lowered his price slightly and instantly got more customers! How exciting to see children succeeding  in real life experiences!

Another highlight was the number of parents and friends that dropped in to play! It was great to see families together. We had an ex PEPS student come in to play, grandparents and  we even had a couple of people from Perth! Thank you to everyone that could drop in, the students were so proud!

How did our money stack up?

I have done a final tally on how much money we made from our arcade. Can you work it out students? Look at the photo above and see if you can count up all the money. Here are some clues to help you;

  • All the 5c, 10c and 20c coins are in piles of $1.00
  • The 50c coins are in piles of $5.00
  • The $1.00 and $2.00 coins are in piles of $10.00
  • The notes are as you see them – ie not in piles.
  • Do not forget to add the loose change also

You can tell us your answer in the comment box below or just bring it to school on Monday, if you don’t want anyone to see it!

Parents you can help but please don’t tell them if they are right or wrong and please dont tell them the answer! We will be looking at this in maths on Monday.

Hmmm I don’t think my prediction of making $30.00 was very good! 😦
